From Volunteer to Full Time Staff!

Teach English in Austria

After leaving Australia to teach English in Guatemala in 2011, I came to Austria with my Austrian wife looking for a new challenge. ABCi was looking for volunteer teachers to teach English in Austrian state schools and I was looking for more teaching opportunities.

After a telephone interview I was quickly accepted into the program and made my way to the ABCi headquarters in Gmunden to begin my three month placement. The program is based on principles of ‘active learning’ and ‘project work’ to truly immerse the students in the English language. Two and a half months along quite a steep learning curve I was starting to feel very confident walking into any Austrian classroom and was enjoying myself immensely (as were my students).

Through this progression in my volunteer responsibilities I was lucky enough to be offered a full time job as a senior teacher with ABCi. I took up further study through the organization to gain my TEFL-YL certification and began to work closely with the other senior teachers to develop new English programs for Austrian schools while continuing to lead groups of volunteers in their implementation. This school year ABCi opened a third office in Graz as the demand for its services continues to grow. I have been fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to lead the establishment of this new location and build up a network of schools and organizations in Steiermark who support ABCi’s mission of bringing free English language immersion classes to every Austrian student by the year 2020. It is an opportunity that I relish and as we have our biggest volunteer intake ever this spring it is an exciting time to be part of such a dynamic organization with such a noble goal.
